Edge 840 losing sensor connection when activity paused

I saw an earlier thread on this topic that did not offer a solution and advice there suggested opening new thread for ongoing issues.

This is a recurring issue whenever a ride is paused. Connection is lost with the sensors, in particular speed/cadence and power meters. HR strap is not affected.

On road this is Assioma pedals. Sensor will fail to reconnect after cafe stops, etc. The unit is not switched off or in sleep mode during the stop.

However it is track riding that causes most frustration. I will start the unit and connect Garmin speed/cadence sensor and Rotor power cranks. After only a few minutes the sensors will disconnect. So if I am participating in track events I need to reconnect sensors each time I enter the track, which is very inconvenient. The activity is paused between drills and races and auto sleep is disabled for this activity profile, because sleep mode also disconnects sensors.

I have tried full factory reset and switching off auto sleep, neither of which resolve the issue. I am using Solar version of the 840 on firmware version 29.22.

Given that this is a known problem, has this been addressed by Garmin support?

TIA

  • Yeah.  IDK.  Sensors like speed, cadence, PM,  go to sleep after the bike has been stationary for a while so those connections are lost.  The HR strap doesn't sleep since it stays awake as long as it's being worn.  The thing is, it seems the Edge is only open to connect to sensors for a period after it's been turned on.  After that, it won't automatically connect anymore so I have to do it manually.  Agree it's a pain. Turning the Edge off rather than pausing it may be a workaround, though it takes a minute for it to boot up.

  • I opened a ticket with Garmin who responded very quickly to requested logs and also ask that I participate in the beta software program to allow them to monitor my activities using firmware 30.11.

So let’s see if anything comes of that.

I will post my updates here if they will be of any benefit to other users.

  • How long of a pause before the speed/cadence sensor and power meter disconnect and won't reconnect? Auto-pause is disabled for all my bike profiles.

I just did two tests indoor with my Edge 840 (with the latest beta firmware 30.14) with auto-pause enabled.

Test 1 pausing the Edge 840 for 10 minutes: It reconnected with both the speed sensor and the power meter when I spun both the crank arm and the wheel.

Test 2 pausing the Edge 840 for 20 minutes: Again, the Edge 840 reconnected with the speed sensor and power meter after I woke them up by spinning them.

  • How long had the 840 been recording before trying the 10 min and 20 min pausings?   What I've seen is after a period of time recording, it quits trying to connect to sensors. For example:  I'll forget to set my watch to broadcast HR and after a while I'll notice that. I'll set it to broadcast, but my 840 won't pick it up automatically.  I have to go into Sensors and manually connect it.

  • I think the situation you described is different. After powering on the 840, it listens to signal from all the devices paired to it. If it does not find them, it will stop trying to connect to them after several minutes. Danny's issue is his Edge 840 does not automatically reconnect to cadence/speed sensor and power meter that were previously connected at the beginning of his activity. He mentioned it would only take a few minutes for the sensors to disconnect and not reconnect. In my tests, the sensors reconnected to the Edge 840 after 10 and 20 minutes of inactivity (the Edge 840 was auto-paused).

  • Any improvement on the latest beta? It's not something I see with HRM Pro Plus on my Edge 840, but I'm just pondering buying Favero Assioma Pro RS pedals and would rather that they worked correctly...!
