How to deal with / modify Garmin Coach sprint workout that has intervals at too high pwr

Hi Everyone,

I have been using a Garmin Coach plan for an upcoming event, and it's been going well overall. However, today I was given a Tuesday sprint session which (16 10 second intervals 20 sec rest) X 2 with 5 minute zone 1 between at a wattage which was probably at least 200 watts over my capability.  I did finish it, but it was rated a 5 of 100 for successful completion which I totally agree with.  I rated it maximum as what I was able to do was as much as I could do.

I checked my FTP and max heart rate and they were correct.  All the previous workouts including one sprint maybe a month ago I have been able to complete.

Because I have seen it change up my workouts in response to other outdoor rides etc., I went back to Garmin connect a few hours later.  Indeed, it had modified my schedule.  Unfortunately, it swapped out my Thursday tempo ride for another carbon copy of Tuesday's sprint workout.

Has anyone else come across this?  I do see mentions of impossibly difficult sprint sessions being prescribed but no real solutions provided.  It doesn't seem that I can modify the workout so I'm wondering what others are doing.  Maybe creating their own workout which has the same number of intervals with a lower power?

Thanks in advance for your help and guidance!

  • You know, now that I think about this...  Maybe It's a technique issue.  I am doing this on a Jet Black Victory trainer with Zwift hub using the suggestions of using the small chainring.  It's really difficult to get the flywheel speed up.  I'm wondering if I switch to my outer chainring that I might be able to spin things up better.

I also noticed that TrainerRoad suggests using resistance mode for short sprint intervals and not ERG mode.  Now I'm wondering if there is a way to do that but looking through the Garmin forums it doesn't seem possible to permanently override the ERG mode.

    Additional thoughts welcome thanks!
