Edge 840 now takes very long to sync

One of the reasons I upgraded to an 840 was reviews about the sync time being much faster than my previous device. For a long time, this has been the case. The device has synced activities within a minute of me ending the activity. 

Over the past couple of updates, something has changed. My activity now doesn't sync, takes forever to sync or requires I do a dance of turning BLE/syn off and back on on my phone and Garmin Edge. 

Are there any steps I can take to make this better, like it was when I purchased my device? 

  • How are you syncing. My 840 syncs one of three ways: to iPhone thru bluetooth; or via WiFi; or thru a cable to a Mac. Usually it is to the iPhone using bluetooth. Once in a while that iPhone bluetooth sync doesn't happen immediately and I just open Garmin Connect on the iPhone and click the little circle in the upper right next to the word "Home" and it sync immediately. I suspect this has to do with the iPhone bluetooth connection as it almost always happens before I can even take my iPhone out of the seat bag on the bike. The other two ways also work quickly. If your sync works quickly thru a cable to a computer, that would point to a bluetooth RF connection vagary, and bluetooth does have once in a while interruptions as anyone using bluetooth headphones can tell you.

  • Sync time can vary depending on the length of the activity, but there are a few general troubleshooting tips to try.

    First, ensure your Edge and Connect app are both up to date. Next, make sure that your Connect app is running on your phone. It can be open in the background, but needs to be running nonetheless.
