Garmin 840 does not connect to Garmin Express on Windows 11

I have a Garmin Edge 840, currently running on 27.11 - which is unfortunately stuck during "loading activities..."
Now I wanted to update using Garmin Express on my Windows 11 - I forced the device into MTP, so it shows up in Explorer as "Edge 840" (and I could browse on it)
But unfortunately Garmin express cannot find it.

Any ideas?

Garmin Express Version 7.27.0+e0f6065

I tried it also multiple times with/without touching the device in explorer, since I know mtp is not in favor of multiple accesses.
