840 - powering off mid ride

Hi,

bought a new Edge 840 last week and on my first few rides today - on my commute to and from work on several occasions the device powered off and on again resulting in lost rode data etc - it’s seemed to happen every 30mins - I contacted Garmin support and they said it was an software issue and they recommended using the beta program to fix the issue! Just enquiring if anyone else had this issue?

thanks

  • Was on a several day ride and had it on two days happening several times. It "only' lost data within the restart, not the whole ride. Was annoying.

  • I contacted Garmin support and they said it was an software issue and they recommended using the beta program to fix the issue!

Tell them the beta ended a few weeks ago and the released production version 28.20 has serious issues with reports similar to yours in all the MTB, 1050, 1040, 840 & 540 forums, there is no current beta.

  • strange that my 840 never restarted with 28.20 (and i use it since the beta state everyday for longer 2-3-4hs rides) so i am very curious what can cause this reboots..

  • Similarly,my Edge 840.has not had this issue either. Perhaps it is dependant upon some configuration change, like mapping, route, CIQ etc.

  • Was reported from the early 28.x betas certainly from 28.13, started mostly on 1050 but all the devices had reports and then again all devices from the early installers for the 28.20 production version, nothing stands out as a common factor / cause but surely garmin is on to it as the pre-production  / production candidate 28.20 was 3 weeks ago?

After 3 years of using every 1040 beta version I skipped 28.xx beta and indeed the 28.20 production as I was happy with 27.xx (and the big cursor & return of mapthemes) and there was nothing in 28.xx that tempted me and in fact a few things that were (without warning) removed in 28.20 eg some map > appearance > advanced options? I have never had a crash / re-boot / freeze etc in those 3 years but only use 10% of functions and skip most that are resource / memory intensive.

  • It were 6-8h rides per day for me incl. breaks. Had used a several hundred kilometer long GPX track imported to Garmin navigation using Komoot. The track was used every day, since there was no specific plan where to start and end per day. Had the feeling it happened when I was off the track and it started calculating the re-route track, although I was more focused on the ride itself and not checking my Edge 840 all the time.

I used energy saver mode, which, btw. seemed to use more energy compared to one day without it active and more map activity on display. Although I have not measured it.
