Gradient showing negitive Value when climbing hills

I have bought a New Garmin 840 Solar and have been out on mulitple rides to see the gradient showing -7% to -1% when climbing gradients over 15% as they show on the climb pro as a dark red

I have the latset software on and done a factory reset. has anyone else had this problem?

  • I bought an 840 in July 2025 and have the same issues.

Today, I rode 60 km without issues, and when i started navigation back home, the gradient was permanently wrong (GPS signal was on spot).

A typical situation looks like this: The road is flat, gradient says any random number (in this example "0 %"), the Graph is yellow / or red, showing a climb or the other way round.

In the next example, the gradient says (7 %) but the Color is green. The remaining distance was also wrong, i guesś it was a different path (although navigation was on)

Anotther example: "Remaining climb" is like 30 meters, but the road is actually already going down.

The map is not the issue, since it started after riding back (the same route, full 60 km).

  • Ya, welcome to Garmin. Gradient value has been wrong ever since they "fixed" the gradient to be more responsive. For what it's worth it's right sometimes and I think the overall moving average is probably correct. Best work around is to install a 3rd party connect IQ app. Those tend to be accurate for near instantaneous data depending on how you set it up.

  • I have returned the headunit and gone to another competitor(wahoo). such ashame garmin.
