840 following loaded course and recording ride.

When I’ve loaded a saved course and also recorded the ride, my battery only lasts about 6 hours.
is this normal? I thought garmin batteries lasted ages

Check Menu > System > Display > Backlight Timeout setting, is it 15sec (or greater) or "Stays On"?

that is problem, that drains the battery . that needs only at night or in dark room , the 15sec is the good choice

how long should I expect from my battery if I follow a course, record my ride with back light on 15 seconds?

i have a 9hs ride where i used the navigation (followed a preloaded course) for 6-7hs for sure ( i dont have exact info about it), the battery went down from 93% to 63%, i use the MultiGNSS/MultiBand "Best" settings and i have PWR,HR,SPD sensors and 15sec backlight

ah one more thing, the Brightness is on "Auto", if you pull the slider to manual 100%, it eats the battery also (but the "Stays On" is the biggest battery eater :))
