Connect IQ says Garmin Edge 840 needs update, but Garmin Express says device is up-to-date

I just bought the Garmin Edge 840 and have a problem with Connect IQ.

When I go to Garmin Express, is says it's up-to-date with version 24.56, but when I try to download an app in Connect IQ, it says I need to update my device first.

I've tried it first on my MacBook, later on a Windows PC, same problem. I did a hard reset of the Garmin Edge twice, also no succes afterwards. I tried to update my Garmin with the Connect app on my phone, but nothing changed after the synchronization. This were all things that I found online or on this forum, but unfortunately nothing helped.

Are there  people here that had/have the same problem (and found a solution maybe)? I thinks there is a later version available than 24.56 if I'm correct, so that suggest the problem is in the Garmin Express.

Help is greatly appreciated!

  • Current 840 software version is 27.14 so there is definitely an update due. I can only suggest uninstalling Express from your Windows PC and re-installing it to see if that will "force" the upgrade to your Edge.

  • Add a wifi network and try to force check an update on the unit itself

  • Hi Druïde, thanks for your quick answer. Unfortunately I already tried uninstalling express.

Maybe I can go another way by using the Beta-version to overcome the problem or just send it back to the shop where I bought it and let them solve it out with Garmin. Are there people from Garmin on this forum or is it just other users?

  • thanks for the suggestion. I think you mean the option synchronizing via wifi? This option is also nog working at the moment, but not sure why. Its seems the device is properly connected to wifi, and after pressing synchronizing, it changes shortly to 'connecting' to 'busy with transfer' and then after a few seconds it says 'synchronization failed'.
Maybe it has to do with WPA3? I found a tread somewhere that says the device uses the older WPA2, but I'm not really good with this stuff so I have to dive into this issue as well.

  • A I think what you mean, I went to System > about > check for updates. But unfortunately, no updates were found ;(

  • is it international Edge 840? the latest stable is 27.14 , maybe there is a corrupted update file is on your Edge, plug it on a windows pc, and check the Edge mass storage for update file and delete it.

  • Hi Luko, thanks for your answer. Not sure if it's an international Edge, bought in the Netherlands. Anywhere tips where to check this?
I went into the mass storage on the Windows pc (my Macbook is not showing the device): Garmin > _updates > deleted the one file that was there. After that nothing changed, but than I decided to deleted the map _updates aswel. And guess what, it did the trick! The problem with ConnectIQ is also solved now.
Wow thank you so much for helping!

  • Update via WiFi did the trick. it's in the system menu in About. I had to do it two times

  • This is simply ridiculous. C'mon Garmin. Garmin Express app is a goddamn dog. FIX IT, PLEASE. You don't give a rip once the box is out the door. disrespecting customers makes Wahoo richer. What the *** is wrong with you folks?
