Garmin arbitrarily eliminated Mass Storage Mode Mac Edge 540,840,1040 and newer

I think that Garmin has a lot of nerve to discontinue a working feature with no recourse.  I am talking using MTP protocol for Macs. This means that Mac cannot see the newer Edge devices as mass storage.  Customer service suggestions (Use a smartphone or Windows Computer) is not relevant IMHO.   How does Garmin know that I would have bought yet another of their Edge computer had I known they discontinued this feature?

I am all for adding features but don't arbitrarily discontinue working features.

  • Sorry you got caught off guard but it was announced several software versions ago: https://forums.garmin.com/beta-program/edge-540-840-1040-series/f/announcements/389973/public-beta-24-54---pre-rollout-special-instructions-in-post

     * MTP improves file system stability and enables the engineering team to continue delivering new features to your device. This update will align these devices with the 1050 regarding how new updates are packaged/delivered.
For Macs, this changes how you can manually transfer files to and from the device.

Have you tried an MTP host like https://openmtp.ganeshrvel.com/ ?

  • Nothing arbitrary about it.  Talk to the guy who bought a computer with 17% market share. Traditional use is in education and graphic arts, you will have problems.  Buy a Windows laptop, refurbished for $200 and your problems go away.

  • I can see that logic is not your strong point. So your solution when I encounter a problem that Garmin created is to "buy more"?  I could understand putting this feature on a new device so that you would know that this situation exists in the beginning. But to arbitrarily take away a basic feature because of some "file system stability issue" and not be bothered to offer a work-around when one exists?  No, that is just developer (and support) laziness. As far as just buying a $200 Windows laptop, is there one that Windows 11 runs on? Because Windows 10 will go EOL later this year and what will you have then?

  • I stumbled on openmtp on my own after looking at the article in the Garmin support site stating that one of the updates did use MTP as the file transfer protocol and that Mac does not support it.  However, their support site did *not* offer a solution. I even called Garmin and got pretty much the same answer.  I then went on a wild goose chase because someone on the forums suggested to use Android File Transfer.  However, this is Windows only software.  I then stumbled on OpenMTP.  I wrote a simple tutorial describing its use, posted it to the forum only to have it flagged as spam.  I contested the spam flagging and they finally relented and released it on the Forum.

My problem is the laziness and carelessness on Garmin's part.  A protocol that worked on my  Edge 820,830 and initially 840, no longer worked.  It would have been a simple fix had Garmin posted OpenMTP on their  support page.  But they couldn't be bothered.
