Edge 840 FTP estimation is still a joke

The Edge 840 gave after a 2h ride a 241W FTP value (from 238W). in this 2h ride there was 1h 254avgW (with 0 watts included in the average, of course), 268xPower, 270wNP, the HR was for this 1h apprx 85%MaxHR, 10BPM below LTHR.

My simple question to the Garmin / FirstBeat engineers: dont you think that it is not so professional (or with one word: a joke)

if somebody can ride for 1h with such a parameters, the estimated FTP is around 280-290W. but in worst scenario, the Garmin must give 254W as Estimated FTP because the rider rode 1h at this power. if calculating from the best 20min avg, that is 279x0.95=265W. if we calculating and interpolating with power/hr ratio with this 1h 254W, then between 280-290W, but not 241W that is 1000% sure. too low and the suggested trainings will be too low, with zone/s/ lower, lets say a 2h base ride suggestion 241x0.65=155w but it is only 155/280 , which is FTP55%, so a recovery ride with 0 benefit...

so  ,   , can you tell it to the responsible person to tweak a "bit" on this FirstBeat algorhythm? the FR965 gave also the same value, so the whole actual FirstBeat stuff is still bad, since 2.5 years for sure.

  • Hi  thanks for your post.

Your recorded one hour averaging 254 watts indicates that your FTP could be higher than was estimated. If you were to continue exceeding your current FTP estimate, the estimate should continue to go up. A single ride's power data is not the only determining factor for FTP estimates, for more info please review the related VO2 max requirements and Garmin's FTP Estimate Feature details.

We'd suggest inputting your FTP manually to the higher value that you expect (280-290W). A manual input will disable "auto-detect" FTP estimates for your Edge 840, you can simply re-enable auto-estimation before continuing to train and recording new data.

If this is a new device, it will take some time and new data to fully learn your capabilities.
Garmin continually investigates and works to improve the overall accuracy of these estimates, thanks for your feedback!

  • We've reviewed the activity details and will not be making specific changes at this time.

We do not classify FTP based solely on power data during a single 20 minute interval. The FTP measurement is a value based on your overall current fitness, for more details see: Garmin Cycling Science - Function Threshold Power
