Issue with Edge 840 Performance After Updates

I am reaching out because I am encountering severe performance issues with my Garmin Edge 840 following the last two firmware updates: versions 27.13 and 27.14.

Previously, the device was not perfect, but it worked well enough to record my rides and follow routes I uploaded. However, since these updates, significant problems have arisen when I try to follow a ride (whether it’s a new route or one I have already followed multiple times). Specifically:

  • Performance Issues: Once the ride is loaded, the device becomes extremely slow and unresponsive. Actions like zooming or switching data screens do not work properly, and even the map becomes sluggish.
  • Device Freeze and Reboot: At some point during the ride, the device freezes completely and eventually reboots without warning. This causes ride recordings to stop entirely or, worse, be lost.
  • Troubleshooting Steps Tried: I have attempted to reduce the occurence of the issue by removing profiles and wiping the device history and all remaining not vital files, checking fit file contents for wrong or corrupted data but unfortunately, these efforts have not resulted in any improvement.

These issues have made the Edge 840 unacceptable for use, as I can no longer rely on it to correctly track and manage my rides.

I do hope for a new firmware upgrade soon and hopefully this will fix the fixes that does not seems to have been tested deeply.

  • IDK, but a factory reset of my device straightened out a number of problems.  After the reset, my profiles and setting were all restored by the Connect app on my phone.  I did have to reinstall the IQ apps I have on the device.

  • I have the same issue today. I've recently updated to 27.14 and today was the first time ever when my edge 840 freezed totally and then randomly rebooting all the time.

  • I did remove all my past activities and deleted most of my routes as well and runs smooth again now. In fact this is the same as a Factory reset but without losing profiles and iq apps
