No auto full shutdown mode

After a ride I have set up my Edge 840 to automatically upload my ride by wifi. However unlike my old Edge 1030 there is nothing on the screen to tell me that my ride has been uploaded. So I usually wait to turn off my Edge while I'm getting out of my cycle gear and, of course, I often forget to turn my Edge off. While I usually get a notification on my phone app that my Edge has been located, which reminds me that I forgot to turn it off but today I didn't get the notification until after I had left home for the day. When I came back my Edge was down to 3% battery. And yes I had battery saving enabled.

I have two questions:

1. Why doesn't the unit completely shutdown, say 5 minutes, after a ride has finished?

2. Why, unlike the basic Edge 130, doesn't the unit, when shutting down, give you the option to wait to fully power off until the ride has been uploaded? That way I could choose this option and know that it will automatically fully power off as soon as the ride has been uploaded.

  • It works like this becasue clearly the people that design these things don't use them.

I can maybe understand that if a ride is in progress they cannot Auto-Shutdown the device, but cannot see the reason why you cannot Auto-Shutdown after X amount of time if a ride is not in progress.

ideally, the settings you would have are:

Auto Sleep after [never, X minutes]

Auto Shut-Down after [Never, X minutes] (have this setting override the Auto-Sleep setting - so, if it is in sleep mode, it will just turn off when the auto shut-down time has been met)

Auto Shut-Down after [None , ride save or ride save and successful upload] (with the Auto Shut-Down after X minutes overriding this if it does not complete the upload)

[Where X minutes is a time you can configure]

The situation you describe is exactly the same issue I have had all all Garmin Edge models since they have been able to upload wireless mainly the 520 and 530 and the 840, and I find it extremely irritating as it has occured several times in the past since owning these devices. It would not be much of an issue, if the sleep mode did not drain the battery so much, but normally after 1 ride and the device in sleep mode for less than 24 hours, I would have less than 10% battery left.

  • My unit goes to sleep just fine. Do you have the auto sleep setting enabled?

I agree it should have an upload complete notice (although I find that BT syncs more quickly - phone goes beep shortly after). In fact, there should be better interrupts such as not to power off during sync or downloading a system or map update. Downloading a 10+ GB file even while plugged in is fruitless.
