ClimbPro and Climb Explore with only Western Europe?

Hiya

So, I recently upgraded from a 530 to an 840. I loved my 530, but got a good deal on the 840.

Anyway, I have (after lots of fun) managed to get the Edge to talk to Garmin Express and use map manager. The egde came installed with CycleMap Europe and TopoActive Europe (the whole of Europe). I live in the UK and don't have plans to travel overseas with my bike in the near future so wanted to save some space on the edge by removing "Central Europe" and "Eastern Europe". I unchecked the box on Garmin Express and it removed them from my edge. Great.

However, doing this also removed CycleMap Europe and it is CycleMap Europe that allows ClimbPro and Climb Explore to work.

I had to remove the TopoActive Western Europe from the Edge using Garmin Express and then re-download the large (18Gb) TopoActive Europe using MapManager on the Edge itself. The first time I did this, it took about 4 days because the edge kept going to sleep (I've since discovered the fix to this).

I understand that CycleMap is being discontinued and we are all to use TopoActive, but does anyone know why ClimbPro needs the CycleMap and/or is there a way that I can have just Western Europe and still have an Edge that has all of it's functionality?!

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I can go back to Garmin Support, but I've been chatting to them for days and they're probably fed up with me!

  • Thanks for all the input. I’ve deleted the “all of Europe” map from the edge and installed the Western Europe one.

when I look on the edge map manager it shows TopoActive Europe (but only countries I wanted) and “CycleMap Europe”

    there is none named “ClimbPro”

  • Could you look in the Garmin\SQL\Internal folder and tell me what files you see.

  • I tried install just the Western region on a 540 and it worked as expected.

  • Thanks
This is what I see when I mount the Edge (I have a Mac so needed to use MacDroid to see "under the hood")

The full file path is Internal Storage\Garmin\SQL\Internal Storage

and this is what I see under "Custom Maps"

  • In the SQL folder D9943 is the ClimbPro EU West 2025.10

The maps that are you are listing in the CustomMaps folder should be in the Garmin folder on the 840

    D4713 Garmin DEM map 2023.10

    D4728 Gecode EU 2024.10

    D6185  Topo Europe West 2025.10

    D7557 Trailforks 2025.10

You may want to contact Garmin support about his or you could try moving all those files in the CustomMaps folder to Garmin folder.

This is how my 540 looks

  • Hi

thanks so much for looking at this.

So I have all the correct files, they just happen to be in the wrong place on the edge, which is why I can’t see them.

Think I’ll take this to Garmin support and see what they say.

The unit works fine at the moment; the bit I’m most concerned about is if it doesn’t recognise that there is an update at some point in the future
