ClimbPro and Climb Explore with only Western Europe?

Hiya

So, I recently upgraded from a 530 to an 840. I loved my 530, but got a good deal on the 840.

Anyway, I have (after lots of fun) managed to get the Edge to talk to Garmin Express and use map manager. The egde came installed with CycleMap Europe and TopoActive Europe (the whole of Europe). I live in the UK and don't have plans to travel overseas with my bike in the near future so wanted to save some space on the edge by removing "Central Europe" and "Eastern Europe". I unchecked the box on Garmin Express and it removed them from my edge. Great.

However, doing this also removed CycleMap Europe and it is CycleMap Europe that allows ClimbPro and Climb Explore to work.

I had to remove the TopoActive Western Europe from the Edge using Garmin Express and then re-download the large (18Gb) TopoActive Europe using MapManager on the Edge itself. The first time I did this, it took about 4 days because the edge kept going to sleep (I've since discovered the fix to this).

I understand that CycleMap is being discontinued and we are all to use TopoActive, but does anyone know why ClimbPro needs the CycleMap and/or is there a way that I can have just Western Europe and still have an Edge that has all of it's functionality?!

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I can go back to Garmin Support, but I've been chatting to them for days and they're probably fed up with me!

  • Same issue here on my 1040. Interested in a reply from Garmin :)

  • So there are two parts to ClimbPro. There is the free ride detection. This uses a routable map and the DEM data and projects up the road to find climbs. This does not need the ClimbPro database to work, but is enhanced if it is present.

The second part is the Climb Explore that allows you to search for climbs as well as showing climb start icons on the map. This uses the ClimbPro database.

When the Topo map is installed Garmin Express should also install the ClimbPro database for the map region installed for units that support the Climb Explore page in the control loop.

If ClimbPro does not show in the list of maps under the navigation, map information for the profile you are using you may need to try re-installing the regional map.

There were some issues with the map update when the switch to Topo maps was first made. Those have now been fixed.

If after re-installing the regional map you still do not see ClimbPro listed for your region I would recommend contact Garmin support.

  • Thanks for this clear response. I did the update a few weeks ago via Garmin express, but I have read on the forum that this update doesn’t remove the older versions of the maps. (Which was indeed the case for me) therefor my climbpro stopt working. I did remove the europe maps this morning via express and downloaded them via the edge itself again (took me 8 hours). Seems that this worked out and removed the older ones now. Curious to see if climb pro works again now

  • Hiya

    Thanks for this response.

so just to confirm, if I remove all the maps from my Edge and install the TopoActive Western Europe, once that’s done I should also see a “ClimbPro” map in the list of maps?

  • Yes you Will. However there is no topoactive Western Europe, only whole of Europe. Climb pro on the older maps has been stopped with the support of the old Garmin maps

  • That's from my Edge 840. TopoActive Europe, West and ClimbPro EU West

    And from Express

  • Thank you
    that’s what I haven’t got!

when I installed the Western Europe TopoActive, I didn’t get the ClimbPro map. Would you be able to tell me the steps you used? I don’t need all of Europe on my edge but I do want ClimbPro!

  • On my Edge 840 are:

    - TopoActive Europe 2025.10 all three regions ( west, central and east )

    - Garmin ClimbPro EU central 1 ( 2025.10 )

    - Garmin ClimbPro EU east ( 2025.10 )

    - Garmin ClimbPro EU central 2 ( 2025.10 )

    - Garmin ClimbPro EU west ( 2025.10 )

  • Thanks. I’ll try again and see if I can get it to download the correct ClimbPro map.

did the appropriate ClimbPro maps install for you when you installed the corresponding TopoActive map?

  • Yes. I use Garmin express to install TopoActive EU map.
