Does the now discontinued Edge Remote work with the x40 series?

I'm a big fan of the Edge Remote, I use it exclusively to look at various screens on my 530. I've been working towards replacing my 530 with the 840, but without the Remote to control the head unit, I might also consider competitor models. The Remote was a huge differentiator for me to choose Garmin, and with its demise I'm not sure now. I own two Remotes, but if/when they die, there may not be an advantage for me to stick with Garmin. I've no interest in electronic shifting for MTB, so the Remote is my only option to control the head unit without taking my hands from the bars. So... the question... Do the existing Edge Remotes work with the 840, and can anyone from @Garmin possibly comment on bringing a Remote back?

My guess would be because of the EU RED (Radio Equipment Directive) requirements for secure commination.

Ok, but how does that get it discontinued in the USA? It's just another sensor, and... somehow the electronic shifters are able to provide Edge control without offending the authorities.

I know I'm beating a dead horse, but I was hoping to generate some traction to show Garmin how popular the Remote is for those of us that rely on it.

Yes, I found it was also still available in Canada. I have two and can live with one to switch between bikes, but it would be more comforting to know this will be available and supported by Edge devices for years to come.

Where is this based on? Especially for the Garmin remote. Is it ANT+ or BT?

I'm currently in Mallorca with a hire bike using Di2 shifters for the first time and linked them to my Edge 840. It's very handy having the remote access so I can see how the Garmin Remote would also be useful.

Maybe Di2 is exactly why Garmin have dropped their own remote?

Perhaps, but that's weak to assume that we will all have electronic shifting. For MTB I'm not sure that the electronic shifters even support the remote function. And MTB is where it is most valuable for not being able to remove a hand from the grip on challenging terrain.

I appreciate the replies, perhaps it will help Garmin reconsider. The product is a cash-cow, all they have to do is keep making it.
