power 3s

Hello I have an edge 840 and in the workout screen I see the instant power and not power 3 seconds as it appears on many other Garmin.

How do you change that value?

  • I moved your thread from the 540 forum to the 840 forum for clarity.

You are able to edit the data fields on the workout data screen, and instructions to do so can be found here

  • No I tried but the primary objective data range cannot be modified only that on the 540 the power appears every 3 seconds

    • I tried but it doesn't work the primary target data field is not modifiable and the instantaneous power appears. Insteather in the edge 540 the power appears every three seconds
  • The Edge avg power updates every second even though looking at the 3 second avg (or the 30 sec avg, etc.)  This is called a "moving average."  If you number the seconds 1,2,3,4,5,6 etc., the first reading will be the average of seconds 1,2, and 3.  The next reading appearing a second later will be the average of seconds 2,3,and 4. The next reading appearing a second after that will be the average of seconds 3,4, and 5. It's always an average over three seconds, but those three second windows overlap.

  • is right.  There is no such thing as 'instant' power.  This is just physics: power is defined as the amount of energy transferred over a period of time. Thus, it will always be averaged over a period of time, which won't generally be the same as the display refresh rate.
