Edge 840: Unable to copy an *.img file

Hello everyone,

I hope I haven't missed a discussion, because I've been trying for a day and a half to copy a map (a *.img file) to my Edge 840 on my MacBook (the unzipped ‘OFM_DE(01-03-2025_gps.)zip’ from https://www.openfietsmap.nl/downloads/germany).

Unfortunately without success.

I found some sources on the internet that actually describe quite well what to do and it's not that complicated. I have also downloaded and tested some other img files (e.g. the Freizeitkarte).

And I've also learnt that since the Edge (or Android) is not natively recognised on the Mac, you need third-party software to access the Edge's file system.

In the first round, I used ‘OpenMTP’ (openmtp.ganeshrvel.com/), then again ‘Commander One’ (mac.eltima.com/.../mtp-file-transfer.html), and finally I was able to find an old version of ‘Android File Transfer’ (which is probably no longer supported for Mac) online.

With all three software versions I was able to access the Garmin and copy smaller files back and forth. For example, I was able to copy the ‘classic.ktmf’ MapTheme from the Edge, edit it locally and then get it to run on the Edge as another MapTheme.

But as soon as I try to copy the ‘gmapsupp.img’, all three programmes freeze, abort the copying process or immediately disconnect from the Edge. I then have to disconnect the Edge from the Mac, switch it off and remount it so that I can access it again.

I hope I have made it reasonably clear what is happening to me! And hopefully someone has an idea what I could try so that large files are also copied?

Regards,
Adam
