840 non-solar screen recording issue (FW 26.17)

Anyone else having issue with screen recording stopping on its own, even though there's plenty of space on the device? This seems to happen randomly. Sometimes the screen recording would run for quite a while. Most of the time though, it would stop after a few minutes. What could be the cause of this?

Here's the content of the stop.log file for a screen recording that stopped on its own:

The stop.log for one that I intentionally ended is:

  • Garmin support had me delete a bunch of files that start with DXXXXXXX in the Garmin folder on the 840. The files deletion not only freed up a bunch of space - more than a few GB  - it also significantly shortened the amount of time - slightly over 30 seconds - it takes to power on the device and reduced the lagginess when switching activity profiles from the main menu. I am hoping this will take care of the screen recording stoppages.

  • I can’t even find the ‘hidden’ option to start recording. Can you tell me where to find it so I can test? I am on beta updates.

  • Tap the display on any activity screen, for example a data screen. Then press and hold the lower right corner of the display, as seen in the photo.

  • I just realized I did not get the photo uploaded earlier.

  • By the way, this hidden menu has been added to the public firmware so you do not need to stay on beta FW to use it.

  • That’s good to know. Would also be good if there was a slightly more accessible way of toggling this on and off mid-ride.

  • The fix suggested by Garmin did not work. After deleting all the files in the Garmin folder that starts with DXXXXXX, the screen recording stopped on its own after about 20 minutes or so. Deleting all those files also got rid of all the navigation maps, as I found out riding my ride. I then factory reset the 840 and re-installed the following maps: North America, Taiwan, and Singapore/Malaysia. The screen recording issue became magnitude worse. I could not get it to run more than a couple of minutes.

  • I finally found a solution to my screen recording issue. This issue has not only affected the 840, it also affected my new 1040 solar. This is what I had to do:

    - Select the Device Reset option that "Delete data and reset settings"

    - Do not add device to Garmin Connect and therefore do not sync with Garmin Connect

I found out after many trials and errors that if I add the device and then synchronize with Garmin Connect, the screen recording issue returns. This happened to both the 840 and 1040 Solar.
