My 840 refuses to figure out a route that involves ferries. It begins "Calculating..." to about 60% then drops down repeating over and over until it gives up. I even dug around the activity profile settings under items to avoid and unticked "ferries". I am using the latest NA map 2024.20 and trying to route over the Staten Island Ferry, possibly the most trafficked water crossing in America, so it's not unknown. There are several other ferries in the area, too. I even tried to take my route into Garmin course planner and manually dragging over the visible line between Manhattan and Staten Island but it refused to connect.
I searched the forum and some others have had a similar problem from years ago. So my solution has been to break routes into pieces and load them separately.
