Garmin edge 840 not charging

Hi all,

I haven’t used my edge 840 for a couple of months, when I turned it on it would not sync to Connect and the 840 would not charge. I removed the device from Connect and reset the 840 to factory settings and then reconnected to my smartphone, so that now works. The problem is the charging and battery, it keeps showing a message saying External Power source lost and as such the 840 is charging very slowly and intermittently. I have done a software update and it’s on the latest version.

any ideas/suggestions?

  • I can only thing of the basic things you've probably already tried; cleaning out the USB port on the 840, different USB cable, different charger...

  • If the charge dropped to flat zero it could have damaged the battery. Even when not used for a while, the battery does get used up some because so much information is stored in volatile memory in the device. Several months is a long time. One (inexpensive) option you have is to replace the battery with a new one, they are user replaceable. These batteries are best preserved over a long unused period by keeping them at 30%-70%, not by allowing them to deeply discharge.
