24.19 Surface Wrong

I just noticed today that my off road rides are showing the wrong road surface.  I've done these trails MANY times, but 24.19 is showing 100% paved now vs. 100% unpaved at the start of September.

Why has this changed and are you aware?  It could be a Garmin Connect issue too, but I can't isolate it.

  • The surface information comes from the map data. Have you changed maps?

  • No, and there can't be any data that shows it paved.  These are my own trails, on my own land, in the middle of the nowhere.

  • The data comes from OpenStreetMap (OSM) and then Garmin modifies it. "Surface" can be paved, unpaved, or might be unknown or various sub-types. It is possible Garmin assumes paved unless it says unpaved, yours probably are likely not even in OSM and if they were might have no value for the "surface" attribute.

    https://www.openstreetmap.org/way/1058221244 (an example)

Go to OSM for your locality to see if they exist in OSM and use the "Query Features" tool to see what attributes they have if any

If you want you can register with OSM and modify the data

You can also look at a planning site like RidewithGPS , pick the RWGPS Cycle map type, it will show unpaved roads with dashed side lines https://ridewithgps.com

  • Maybe, but it was correct in previous releases or  blank.  Something changed to make it default to "paved"

  • Something changed to make it default to "paved"

Very likely, 24.18 was released first week of September and was a very large update, then 24.19 was released mid Sept with a correction to a memory leak, don't know when you installed these releases, you may find the change will be quietly reversed in the next update as it makes no sense? I recall a related discussion (paved/unpaved) in the beta forums but can't find it now, the surface classification was new in 24.xx

    • Added surface type support including on the map, in-ride unpaved road alerts, and post-ride summary.
  • It is a new feature so previously it would have reported nothing.

  • I think you are correct and it started on 24.18 based on the fact that this started in early to Mid-September.  I had the beta, but didn't notice this issue.

I checked the links you gave me and there isn't anything showing, paved or otherwise.  Basically, since these are private trails, they haven't been uploaded anywhere.  Kind of like riding around you backyard.

Thanks and the reason I reported this here is so that maybe they will be aware and refine the feature.

In the long run, it really makes zero difference, just thought they should know.
