Hazard reporting. Why animals and not construction/closed road?

With the firmware 24.x we get hazard incident reporting, which I can see being useful.

But what's the point of the animal hazard? I'm seeing some on the map reported yesterday. Most animals will be gone within minutes of crossing their path, so what benefit is the animal hazard report?

I'd much prefer a road closed/construction option, since those can actually interfere with someone's ride many days/weeks after a report has been made.

I personally ran into two such construction areas where detours were needed for cyclists, and I couldn't really report it based on the options given.

  • Animal hazard makes sense in Australia with magpies swooping a fixed area for a few months a year, it puts the fear into many a cyclist here :-)

  • I use the "animal" to report aggressive unleashed dogs in a yard, or road kill blocking the cycling path. I think obstruction would be the best option for construction/road closures since it is obstructing your path.

I like the idea of marking roadkill! I've only encountered one dog that chased me, but I can see it being useful to mark that area, too!

Obstruction isn't ideal for something like a road closure. I'd use obstruction for a downed tree, provided you can still get around it. But a closed road is a closed road, and an actual detour would be required (and likely planned before the ride).

In any case, thank you guys for sharing your use cases! I do hope this feature expands with more options.

    1. I’ve had an animal hazard at the same spot since this was released (2 months or more?). There has never been an animal at that spot. No way to get rid of it or report that it’s not there anymore. Kind of annoying.
  • Every warning thus far I got on my 1050 and also now on my 840 was not valid anymore. I consider this another nonsense feature. Of course I turned it off.
