Garmin 840 - Impossible to display REAL time to destination?

Had Garmin 840 for a few weeks. I just moved to a new country and trying to learn the popular routes without accidentally doing an 8 hour course. So I create  routes in Strava, use it in Garmin. I have data screen set to show "Distance to Destination" and "Time to Destination".

My assumption is that these data screens should show the ENTIRE course/route distance and estimated time from where I am at any point. If I am going on a long 5 or 6 hour ride I want to get an idea of how much longer I have to go with a quick glance down at the computer. But these screens never show that information, and I just can not figure out what it's showing me at any one time because it's constantly changing randomly... maybe it's showing time to next waypoint, or time of a lap, distance to a segment, or something else?

I have tried everything I can think of.. disconnected strava live segments, turned off auto lap, turned off segments in Garmin, removed all the superfluous waypoints from my Strava maps... still the data its showing in those fields never actually is calculating from a course start point  (little green dot) to end point (the little checkered flag).

One indication in the Time to Destination field is that often there is a tiny little number to the left of the bigger number it shows... like it's trying to tell me that is the next waypoint, or maybe a lap? But anyway, it's always just some random amount of time there, same with distance, it doesn't correlate to the distance of the route I am on.

What am I doing wrong? I am getting so frustrated with this I am ready to get rid of Garmin and switch to Wahoo. The only solution I have right now is just get these very rough estimates by putting my routes in Google maps and taking my phone out occasionally when I wonder how long I have to go..

  • Hi Chris,
in my case these times are correct if no climbpro is active. During active climb all these times (ETA, time to destination...) are related to the end of the climb. At first I didn't like that but now it's not so bad.

Btw I use "configuration" Edge + Forerunner 955 (+ Varia radar to both devices but this information isn't relevant for your question).
I have course/navigation active on both devices but in Forerunner I have disabled climbpro so during the whole ride I see everything related to final destination and on Edge I see times related to end of the climb. In this case if everything ok and I have all information available during the whole ride.

  • Thank you for this information, unfortunately my problem is not related to climbpro. When I add the route at home, it shows correctly. But as soon as I leave home, the times and distances change. For instance, I can put in a 5 hour ride... but 10 minutes into the ride it will show 20 minutes remaining, then after counting down 20 minutes, it may change to 50 minutes, countdown, then change to 10 minutes. I just can not figure out what those times relate to. Almost never during a ride do I actually see a countdown to the end of the original 5 hour ride.

  • Have you looked into some of the Connect IQ apps that deal with this problem?

I use SPH Graph which gives Time to Destination, Distance to destination and ETA to destination. It's calculated differently than how Garmin does theirs and produces realistic times

  • Hmm. And the planned route in the map is still the same? (Just that the countdown isn't some strange and unwanted re-calculatin of the route or something like that.)
