Had Garmin 840 for a few weeks. I just moved to a new country and trying to learn the popular routes without accidentally doing an 8 hour course. So I create routes in Strava, use it in Garmin. I have data screen set to show "Distance to Destination" and "Time to Destination".
My assumption is that these data screens should show the ENTIRE course/route distance and estimated time from where I am at any point. If I am going on a long 5 or 6 hour ride I want to get an idea of how much longer I have to go with a quick glance down at the computer. But these screens never show that information, and I just can not figure out what it's showing me at any one time because it's constantly changing randomly... maybe it's showing time to next waypoint, or time of a lap, distance to a segment, or something else?
I have tried everything I can think of.. disconnected strava live segments, turned off auto lap, turned off segments in Garmin, removed all the superfluous waypoints from my Strava maps... still the data its showing in those fields never actually is calculating from a course start point (little green dot) to end point (the little checkered flag).
One indication in the Time to Destination field is that often there is a tiny little number to the left of the bigger number it shows... like it's trying to tell me that is the next waypoint, or maybe a lap? But anyway, it's always just some random amount of time there, same with distance, it doesn't correlate to the distance of the route I am on.
What am I doing wrong? I am getting so frustrated with this I am ready to get rid of Garmin and switch to Wahoo. The only solution I have right now is just get these very rough estimates by putting my routes in Google maps and taking my phone out occasionally when I wonder how long I have to go..
