Using garmin watch instead HRM with Edge

Hi!

How could I use my Garmin Instinct watch only as an heart rate sensor with Edge 840 instead of an HRM ?

Thank you for answer.

  • Not sure if Instinct supports it, but with other Garmin watches you can enable Broadcast Heart Rate, and then add the watch as an HR sensor to the Edge. Works great with my Forerunner 955.

  • Any wrist heart rate device is very inaccurate for vigorous activity.  I have an Instinct and when I compare to my chest strap heart rate monitor they only agree with light to moderate activity, so I do the opposite... I wear a heart rate chest strap during rides and broadcast to the Edge and the Instinct watch.  The other trick required is to start an "Indoor Bike Ride" on the Instinct but really record the ride on the Edge.  At the end I discard the Instinct "Indoor Ride" without saving.  It seems the Instinct needs this workaround to count the chest strap as the real heart rate during the activity time.

  • Thanx a lot, I will check it

  • For my recreational sports the watch sensor will be accurate enough for me. I don't want to wear more electronics yet. Thank you for your answer

  • Ok, then as suggested by  you can "Broadcast Heart Rate" from the Instinct to the Edge.

Long push middle left button>Settings>Sensors & Accessories>Wrist Heart Rate>Broadcast Heart Rate

Then within the Edge you should be able to add the Instinct as a heart rate sensor.

  • I have a new problem using my Forerunner 245 for heart rate. I put it in broadcasting mode, and can see it in the sensor list on my 840, but when I try to connect to it, the edge cycles between connected and disconnected on about 1 second intervals until it times out as disconnected. What should I try?
