Edge 840 takes 2-3 minutes to wake up and becomes completely dead/unresponsive for several times

I just got my Edge 840 for one day and rode with it once and it suddenly took 2-3 minutes to wake up, only showing the garmin logo when the power button is pressed, normally it takes 1 second right? And It became completely dead several times after that. IDK whether I got a faulty unit or what?

But I can notice that when I charge it using my macbook pro and the type-C cable, it turns itself off and again, only showing the garmin logo and the remaining battery, is this normal?

  • You may want to check for a software update if you just bought the Edge:

in terms of when it is plugged in to a computer, it will appear to be in a "sleep mode" where it goes in to mass storage mode and you will just see that it is charging and connected to a computer.
  • Isn't the issue I encountered a serious one or it is just normal? I've shipped the unit back to the seller so I could not do a check for software update, but I literally am not able to use it due to this malfunction.

  • I do have the same problem from time to time (It happened 3-4 times). It took even longer than 2-3min to wake up. It does not react if I press the power on button multiple times. When I leave the device untouched for a couple of minutes or plug in the USB-C charging cable it wakes up. What is wrong with the device and what should I do?

  • I have the same problem as described above. I put my 840 to sleep 6 days ago and tried powering it on and it wouldn’t turn on. It’s now plugged in to power and is still not turning on. Any ideas on how to bring it back to life?

  • I have the same problem with my Edge 840.  I thought I had a defective button but using a series of long and short presses eventually seems to wake it up.  The other thing to note is that I have about 30 saved locations stored on the device and I wondered whether it has to read all these first?  Having said that, the screen is completely blank until it finally powers on so that is probably nothing to do with it.

So frustrating.  Some times it powers on fine and other more rare occasions it refuses to power on for several minutes whilst I try random long and short button presses until it eventually powers up.

I also wondered whether it was the neoprene cover that I use, so last time I took that off and went through the random button presses and it made no difference.

Fully updated and fully charged, and I still have this intermittent problem.
