Charging fully turns ON device

When I want to charge my 840 it fully turns ON after I plug in the cable. My old 830 went straight into charging mode, no full bootup. I know I can turn it OFF right away and than it goes to charging mode, but *** it's iritating me so much. I use wall plug charger and I'm not using Sleep mode and Autosleep. Allways fully turn it ON/OFF before and after ride. Is this behavior by design or it's just my unit doing it?

  • This has affected just about every Edge unit I've owned - 500, 800, 820, 840. Can't remember whether it affected the old 305 (my first Edge). Anyway, it bugs the *** out of me as well - I cannot think of a single good reason for this to be the default behaviour and it's high time that Garmin sorted it out!

As an aside, I never used an 830. Is it definitely the case that it did NOT fully boot up when charging? Sounds incredible if Garmin really had resolved the issue in that model and then reverted the fix in the 840!

  • Yes, 830 really did not fully boot up when charging. Thats why I'm surprised it's not the case here. I think it has something to do with external power capability, but 830 does it too. Anyway it should be optional in the system menu, something like toggle between charging mode, full boot up.

  • Yes!!! I came here to see if anyone has the same problem and bingo!

My Edge 830 is able to be charged without it turning on automatically, but not my new Edge 840! My bike lights are linked to my 840, and it’s irritating to have them turned on automatically when all I want to do is to charge the damn thing!

  • My 830 behaves as expected - it does not turn on when charging.

  • Normal behavior:  My 840 turns on when plugged into a charger and stays on when unplugged.  Plugged into a PC it goes into mass storage mode and when unplugged from the PC, it boots up.  I leave it on while charging and turn it off after unplugging it.  No harm there.  There can be an issue connected to a PC if the PC cuts the power to the 840 if the computer goes to sleep.  The 840 will boot up, stay on, and potentially run the battery down.  I've never heard an explanation of why it is designed to work this way.

  • How is this still normal when plugging in just to charge the devices turn on.

    My 830 doesn't turn on.

Non of my mobile devices does that.

It's so irritating especially with all the beeps if your phone is near.

And when you switch it off, sometimes the backlight will still stay on with the percentage battery iconic. It is so inefficient to have the backlight remain switched on while charging.

Sometimes the 840 will just totally be off. No backlight no battery percentage icon. I have to switch it on to see the status of the battery percentage charged.

Why cant Garmin just get the basics right before adding new features.

  • I guess it would be no big deal if the 840 is my first bike comp and all bike comps behave this way, but compared to my 830 this is an anomaly.

besides as stated my bIke lightd snd radar are linked to the 840. They turn on when the 840 turn on..  you can now see why this will be a big problem.
