ClimbPro screen disappears a few seconds into the climb

Just got my new Edge 840 yesterday, and updated to firmware 19.19. Went for a short freeride today to try out ClimbPro. I immediately encountered an issue at the main climb on the ride:

I got a countdown to the start of the climb. When I reached the start of the climb, the ClimbPro screen appeared briefly, but then reverted to the previous data screen I'd been viewing. I'd expected the ClimbPro screen to remain on display throughout the climb.

I tried scrolling through the screens to see if I could get back to ClimbPro that way, but it was not present. What there was, however, was a screen showing 2 numbered climb profiles. Fine, I thought, Garmin has detected 2 different climb segments and I just need to tap them to select the one I want - but tapping those profiles did absolutely nothing. So, I ended up completing the climb with my default data display. The Edge obviously knew I was on the climb as I got a notification at the top.

How do I keep the ClimbPro screen on display for the whole climb? Is this a bug? Or might I have a bad config setting? And what is the point of that screen that was showing the 2 profiles?

The ride in question is at https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/12765033179?share_unique_id=9

P. S. I can't see any relevant instructions in the User Guide, nor on DCR's review.
