Yep. 100% brightness kills batteries, and very likely isn't needed. Intense use means lots of senors and using multiple satellite systems. Here's a description of battery life vs various usage scenarios. Note backlight is set to auto, or less.
I can tell you 100% it that it is your brightness. I have mine set to "always on" because i manually set it to 0% for day and brighter for early morning when it's dark. On two occasions between my 830 and 840 I have missed the switch and set it to "auto" for day and on and my battery life was as you experienced for ~4hr rides. When I do it right, I'm @ 75-85%.
It's definitely the 100% brightness. You can see it if you set it to auto, then swipe down from the top. That will show you the hours you have remaining. When I switch my brightness from Auto to 100%, my expected battery life with a full charge goes from 20+ hours down to 8 hours, which is exactly what you are reporting.
