feature request: Auto Backlight on the Edge 840

It is the time of  year again (fall/winter) when it's still dark during part of the ride in the early AM or after sunset.  It would be nice if the Edge 840 had an Auto Backlight option that is triggered when the ambient light falls below a certain threshold.  It would also turn on when you're riding through a tunnel, highway underpass or heavily wooded area. Right now, the backlight option is hidden in too many submenus that are hard to navigate to turn it on, and then off again, and an auto backlight option would be so much more user friendly.

My rear bike light works like this (Magicshine Seeme 200) and I've found it to be very useful. Wish that Garmin would have it as well. Thanks!

  • It does have it.  Most complain it doesn't get bright enough.  Check here:  www8.garmin.com/.../GUID-38BBF113-CD1F-448B-BAF7-5F802FA0814F.html

  • What I'm asking for is a setting for Auto Backlight, in addition to Auto Brightness.  Currently, the backlight setting can only be turned on manually (Stay on or turn off after 15, 30 secs, etc.).  But to get there takes a number of swipes and taps because it's hidden way down in the menu structure to turn on or off.  Setting brightness to the highest level does not turn on the backlight.

One workaround I've found is to have the backlight turned on always, and then use auto brightness to adjust.  Not sure how that's going to impact battery life, and I'd rather have it come on only when needed.

And, yes, I agree with you and everyone else that Auto Brightness isn't bright enough either.
