No elevation data in .fit files since 18.x?

I noticed last week that when I uploaded a couple of weeks worth of data from my 840 Solar to Training Center (yes I know it's old, but I like to keep ride data local for easy reference) that there was no elevation data on any of the rides.

I just connected my Garmin to my computer an repeated the same task, still no elevation data. So I copied off the fit file from my road ride yesterday and opened it in Topofusion, zero elevation data in the track.

Has anyone else noticed this issue? I'm presuming it started with the upgrade to 18.23, I'm currently on 18.25

  • Would you be willing to share one the FIT activity files?

  • 2023-10-15-12-16-13.zip

Checking ride history, I can see it broke going to 18.23

My ride on September 6th was v9.29 and fine, then it updated to 18.23 and my ride on September 7th was missing the data when viewed externally away from Connect. Rides uploaded to Connect and on to Strava are fine.

edit: Just checked my wife's 840 Solar and it has the same issue, fit files from pre-v18 have elevation data when viewed locally, but post v18 there's no elevation.

  • The FIT file does contain altitude data. What I think is happening is that the FIT SDK version was updated and that update changed the name of the data field being used and that the programs you are using have not been updated to support the newer version of the FIT SDK.

The data is now contained in

    enhanced_altitude 2312.8 m
    enhanced_altitude 2312.8 m
    enhanced_altitude 2312.8 m
    enhanced_altitude 2312.8 m

  • Well I guess I'm SOL on Training Center being updated as Garmin dropped that one several years ago!

    Thanks.

  • There is awork around if you still wish to use Training Center. It does involve extra work. Load the activity into Garmin Connect and then export as TCX. You can then load TCX into Training Center
