EDGE 840: Map and navigation not working, failed to get baseman version

I am using a Garmin Edge 840 Solar, and I have Version 18.25 installed. When I was doing the update, I also updated the maps, and now there is an error with the maps and navigation (not sure if it's related). I also think I might have also added the Europe maps. Do you think that messed it up?

When navigating, it would give an error on calculating the route (it would be stuck at 0% and then say "Route calculation error"). When I go to the Map screen, it definitely seems messed up, missing streets, partial maps, etc. On the boot-up screen, I get a "Failed to get basemap version."

Under Map Options, it says "Routable Cycle Map of North America 2023.10", and when I click re-install Map, it completes the installation to 100% and then indicates some kind of error.

PS - Honestly, so frustrated with the Garmin software; first time owning a head-unit and this is the second annoying problem of this kind owing to software I've had. Is the expectation we keep mucking about in file folders, or will they eventually figure it out? Gesh.

  • I also think I might have also added the Europe maps. Do you think that messed it up?

No. There should be more than enough memory space for both maps.

It's possible that you have an old map file that didn't get deleted (and is taking up needed space).

It might be useful to see what is in \Garmin

On the boot-up screen, I get a "Failed to get basemap version."

The basemap isn't used for navigation. This error shouldn't matter (if the device continues past it.

Under Map Options, it says "Routable Cycle Map of North America 2023.10", and when I click re-install Map, it completes the installation to 100% and then indicates some kind of error.

It might be useful to know more about this error.

You should verify that this map is enabled on the device.

Is the expectation we keep mucking about in file folders, or will they eventually figure it out? Gesh.

No. People aren't generally running across the issues you are having. If you are "mucking about in file folders", it's likely you'll make things worse.

    ==========================

Here's a link to the basemap file. It's from a 1030+ but it still should work.

You could consider renaming the file you have and seeing if the copy fixes the basemap error.

  • Hi, did you fix it? I have the same problem with my garmin edge 840.

  • I used the Garmin Express app to reload the maps. I removed the Europe map the reloaded only the North American map again, which seemed to result in the Garmin Express completing the reloading properly. I did not have to muck with any of the files.

  • I also had this problem. all you had to do was download this file and copy it to the Garmin folder on your device. Let me know
