First question: is the basic sampling rate (not the recording rate), which the X30/X40 use to process the data (I'm talking about the grade) is as slow as 1 sec? If yes, I can understand why the grade is fxxking laggy on the current models compared to the old models. The calculated grade needs a smoothing and filtering algorithm, accoring to Garmin, and of course it requires a basic sample points for the process. The 1 sec basic sampling rate (if true) only gives 10 points in 10 sec. Most users find that their unit (X30/X40) has a 10~20 (or even 30) sec lag on gradient. Why not increase the basic sampling rate to 0.5 sec or even 0.2 sec, which can give the same amount of data points in a much shorter time? Thus, much less lag on the grade.
Second question: Compared to the Smart option on the 830, I find that the file saving process takes much more time on Edge 840 solar. On long rides over 8 hrs, the 830 only took 3~5s to save the file with the Smart option, while the 840 solar can take half a minute or even more, and the processing mark (that circle) can stop spining in the half, making the unit look like dead there. Both units are paired with the same HRM, PM and speed sensor. I'd really like Garmin bring back the Smart option, not for the file size, but for the saving speed, or use other good strategy to make it faster.
