Current Owners - Good upgrade from the 530 ?

My 530 wont find any GPS and with the sensor dropouts I'm ready to give up.

This forum is super active, but does the 840 generally work for most ?

  • I have a 530 and a 1040 and really like the 1040 screen and battery life, a bit disappointed by new software bugs.

A 530 to 540 (or 830 to 840) would not (IMO) be worthwhile

530 to 840 would be worthwhile but a similar benefit going from 530 to 830 and perhaps cheaper

x40s have more current bugs than x30s, on the 1040 some now over 12 months old and showing up on the 540/840

Sensor dropouts are still a thing on x40s

  • Thanks for the info

  • I also have the 530, battery life is the major upgrade parameter for me. Although the battery is fine and even without navigating I cannot get more than 16 hours on a charge (estimated, since I never let the unit shutdown). However I have Livetrack, light network, Varia radar, HR, PM and "In the Zone" CIQ data page (just love it so much more than simple numbers!).

The price and the bugs are scaring me away, even more with reports of sensor issues on 40 series too. Seems like a feature on Garmin Edge series devices, since it is being going on for more than 2 years!

I do not consider jump ship at this time, I also have an Enduro watch which I love as primary wearable. Only if they could make the 840 reliable (and the function to completely turn off the touchscreen, even swipes) I would consider it. The 1040 is, IMO, a behemoth on a road bike.

Or Garmin could make me a very happy costumer and launch something like a 940 with a 3" screen, solar and all the issues solved for the price of 840. #dreamON

  • My 530 has been dead-on reliable, almost never a sensor drop out, always reconnects immediately if it happens.  No problems with GPS or anything.  That said, I never use auto pause (a huge source of problems and no appeal to me anyway) and I keep WiFi turned off on the unit as it serves no purpose for me and it is just another source of interference for the sensors.

, have you tried a full factory reset?  Definitely worth trying before you give up on the unit.

I too have been tempted to upgrade to the 840, I love the idea of buttons and touch.  But with a screen that isn't any larger and with the bugs reported I can't see moving from a 530 that is working flawlessly.  My ideal would be the 840 but with a slightly larger screen and without the bugs.  I primarily mtb and can't even imagine having a giant 1040, that's too big.

  • Hi, Cranky K,

Yes I did the full reset twice, once with deleting data and once without.  Also deleted all the app data on my phone, uninstalled and then reinstalled the app. I do have Wifi and auto pause on.  My main problem, which I don't see anywhere on these forums, is that nothing that needs the GPS works anymore. The GPS sensor on the device shows as having 2 bars.

No satellites are found, no location, strava segments, etc.  It also won't "finish" setup on the connect app.  Won't sync my emergency contacts, but it does connect to the device as it shows as connected in the app.

I pulled the trigger and ordered the 840.  Finger crossed.

FYI, everything used to work up until about a week ago.

  • I say yes. I've upgraded from Edge 530 --> Edge 840 Solar and have felt it was well worth it.

  • I decided to go for it mostly based on battery life (had a 315 km race coming up). Definitely don't regret it, and also appreciate the 840s nice-to-have features.

  • I went from 530 to 840.   I like the touch screen and speed moving around the interface is much faster.  Maybe the touchscreen helps with that.   Touchscreen works well when riding on the road with my half gloves.  Not so much on MTB with full gloves.

I feel like the battery life on the 840 is a little worse than my 530.  Not sure if the 840 drains when in sleep mode more than the 530, but I do seem to have to charge more often.

I don't have any problems with any sensor drop outs.

I wanted to ability to put in a new POI to route to, mid-ride without having to use a widget/3rd party app to make it work.   Haven't tested this yet, but supposedly you can do this on the 840.

  • 530 -> 840 is a massive upgrade, it’s better in every way and the user interface is a big step forward.

However there is a MAJOR caveat if you use multiple Garmin devices, ie a Fenix watch as well. They do not play nicely together at this point, there is a serious bug in the consolidation of data into Connect, and you end up having to double record on both devices, which for me negates the point of having the Edge in the first place.

This seems to affect all the x40 computers, and Garmin have so far taken a few months to not fix this issue. I would stick with the 530 if you have another Garmin device you want to coexist with the bike computer. If not - definitely worth the upgrade

  • Interesting. I have an Edge 840 (cycling) and a Venu SQ (walking and weights) and don't have any issues like this. Maybe it's specific to you only?
