Elevation Profile Recording

How does the Edge 840 record the elevation profile?

Does the unit use the DEM or the (inbuilt?) barometer? Sometimes I am getting very weird elevation profiles.

    It uses the DEM data to calibrate the barometric sensor at the start of the activity and then uses the barometric sensor for the data during the activity.

    If you are following a course then is shows the elevation profile from the course file, but will record the data from the barometric sensor.
