840 (Non Solar) Rebooted/Restarted during session

Was near the end of 3+ hour 40 mile MTB ride, nearing the trail head and looked down to see the 840 fully rebooting showing the initial battery level (84%) and normal messages.  Rebooted to the current ride in Stop mode (i.e. red border and flag button to finish).  Hit the button and seemed to save the whole ride as normal - *SO* thankful it didn't lose the ride!!

See that a similar bug reported but specific to the Solar 840 - guessing now its not?

  • The same thing happened to me twice on the same ride. There is something wrong

  • I had this same problem 3 times in the last month, including one yesterday during a mtb ride.

My garmin is a Edge 840 Non Solar. It just rebooted without reason during session.

  • Ok, device rebooted again yesterday during a mtb ride.

    Very frustrating.

    Already on latest firmware 19.19

  • Most of the time I get the spontanous reboot a few minutes after I started an activity, like described above, full boot messages with battery level display, loading maps, etc. and the landing in the "stopped activity" mode with the red frame. Same happens again sometimes after ending and uploading the activty.

  • My 840 spontanously reboots every 4-6 minutes while lying on my desk, no activity in progress, no sensors connected. I noted down the times of the latest reboots: 07:43, 07:50, 07:54, 07:58, 08:02, 08:06, 08:10

These reboots do not happen if the 840 is in mass-storage mode while connected via USB-C to my computer.

  • I did a FACTORY RESET (wiping the settings and data) and reconfigured the device:

    - I was able to restore ("transfer") the previous activity profiles and sensors in the initial setup via the Garmin Connect Mobile app on the smartphone. Incident detection, emergency contacts and live track config also got restored automatically, and also the user data, like FTP, max. HR, etc.

    - I had to manually configure the WiFi and the smart notifications, and I had to manually reinstall and configure the IQ apps and IQ data fields.

This seems to have fixed the idling reboot every ca. 4mins. Also no reboot during my 1st activity yesterday evening.
