Custom cassette size di2

I have previously labelled the individual gears on my 11-34 cassette 12-1 as I find this much easier to process when I’m riding, for example in terms of where I am on the cassette and therefore whether I might have to change chain rings. I’ve done this by entering the values 12-1 as custom gear sizes.

It seems that this isn’t available any more. My Edge is now only allowing values between 5 and 60 as custom gear sizes. Has anyone else noticed this?

I’m on v.9.29. I am wondering whether this behaviour started when I updated recently.

  • I originally set up the sensor with 12-1 as the gear sizes on my previous head unit (Edge 820) which then copied over when I first set up the 840. I deleted the di2 on the 840 today and recreated it and that is when I had the problem. So it might be that the “5 to 60” limits were always on the 840 and not on the 820.

  • Have you checked all gearwise data fields?
I have SRAM AXS and 830, so different setup, yet I think generic fields should work the same way.
Try rear gear data field. It reads x / x, like 1 / 12 or 12 / 12 or whatever your your current gear is. Without changing gear sizes. It shows that way in the "half length" data field size, I haven't checked other sizes.

  • Thanks for the suggestion. I’ll bear it in mind. I think that the restriction on the custom sprocket sizes is something that comes from the software in each head unit. I was able to recreate the custom cassette using my 820 - the restriction on the sprocket sizes didn’t arise there. I now have that sensor, as created on the 820, saved in a “settings.fit” file and can add it to the 840.

  • If you want the index position then use the pre-defined data fields,

    Front Gear

    Rear Gear

    Gears (Combined front and rear)

  • Thanks. “Gear combo” gives tooth count. “Rear gear” gives x/12. “Gears” gIves y/2 and x/12. These are useful options.

  • Just went from a 530 to an 840.  The display I want is the chainring and cog number in one field.  A simple display of "2-5" for example for the large chainring and the 5th cog.  I want large numbers so I can easily read them at a glance.  The current "Gears" display is y/2 and x/11 one over the other, which is small font and hard to read.  I don't need the "/2" or the "/11", that's useless information.  I know the bike has 2 in front and 11 in back, that does not change, don't waste screen real estate with that information, just make the digits larger with useful information.  Basically what "Gear Combo" gives but in cog numbers instead of tooth count.  This does not seem to exist.

In my old Edge 530, I used the "Di2 Gears" Connect IQ data field.  But this data field does not support the Edge 840 for some reason, so I can't download it into my 840.

Any suggestions on ways to get a useful cog indicator displayed?

  • Yep. I achieved that. A bit tortuous to get there. The key is to define a custom cassette.
Basically I had to create a file on my 820 because I could define a custom cassette on there (12-1 rather than 11-34). My 840 won’t allow a custom cassette - I could only choose a cassette from the Shimano list.
I saved a backup of that set of settings from the 820 and imported it on to the 840.
This ought to work for you provided that your 530 allows you to define a custom cassette.
    Does that make sense?
