How to pause workout, but continue recording activity on 840/830 series?

Is there a way to pause workout, but continue recording activity on 840/830 series?

When doing a workout outside, it's sometimes not possible to start the workout right when the workout scheduled it

On the 840 is it. While on the workout page swipe up from the bottom of the page to access the page tray. There should be options to pause, go forward and back in the workout.
