Not sure if this functionality is intended but when the 840 solar is turned off and i charge via wall charger (or connect to PC), it turns on automatically. I would then turn it off and still keeping the unit connected to charge. The unit will show the Garmin logo and the battery charging logo and level but the backlight will not turn on. I remember when using my 530 to charge it, it will not turn on unless you really push the button on.
