Edge 840 not syncing with phone unless on wifi

Hi there,

I have an Edge 840 and a Google Pixel 7 Pro. Unfortunately, I can't get the Edge 840 to connect to my phone unless I'm on a wifi network and completely restart my phone. GarminConnect app can see the Edge 840, but the sync doesn't work.

Anyone else having this problem, and anyone know how to fix? I'm training for an ultra distance race and am often without wifi, so it's a real issue if this won't ever work as I can't change a route on my phone on the fly and send it to the device.

Thanks!

Jo

  • i think the latest GC app for Android is buggy af, i have problems with FR965 sync too (besides the Edge840), very common issue that i push the sync circle but nothing happens, the connection is valid and live (small green dots), the app is unable to read out settings from the watch (hr or power datas in the user profile menu) , the training readiness tab is not showing the latest value (sometimes randomly changing for the actual number for 1-2 secs but goes back to the morning report value, lets say morning 40, actual 51, and this number fluctuating...)  i have similar issue with 840 too, randomly not working (and i hate the random errors because unable or very hard to find the source of the issue...)

  • Same here.  My ride would not sync yesterday.

This morning I restarted my phone, turned on my 840, and it sync'd successfully.  At least I think that was the sequence.....could be I turned on my 840 first.  Not sure :-(

  • Started happening to me now. Can't believe it, this is one of the issues I always had on my 830 and was hoping it was fixed.

  • I found turning off your Garmin and then restarting your phone, then opening Garmin connect seems to work.  Give it a try

  • I'm having the same issue with my my Samsung. I've done 4 rides and this issue won't resolve without unpairing and pairing. I'm considering taking it back for a refund and get the 830 or 1030.

I'm really disappointed in this new Garmin Confused

  • What kind of app permissions do you have set for the garmin app on your phone? is location and cellular data permitted? Some Androids have settings that try to conserve battery when not in wifi or when an app is running in the background.

See the list of android permissions here: https://support.garmin.com/en-US/?faq=TOmjU7rfrn9v5jjEtnWcZ5

  • I don't think it's a permissions issue.  I have the same problem with my 840, but no problems with my 830.

What I've been doing to get around this issue is create a hotspot on my phone, and then do a WIFI sync.

Strangely, I rebooted my phone one evening and some rides that didn't automatically upload Garmin Connect, were uploaded again.  Even though I had successfully already done a WIFI sync.  So, I ended up with duplicate rides showing up in Strava.  But there were no duplicates in Garmin Connect (which is weird).

  • Mine syncs fine on Android. Just restart the device. Force stop the app. Restart the app. Toggle Bluetooth off and on. Restart the phone. Connect to the device. Turn the device off and on. Toggle Bluetooth off and on. Force stop the app. Toggle Bluetooth off and on. Restart the app. Sync!

60 percent of the time, it works every time.

    Enjoy!

  • I don't think it's a permission issue. My 830 uploads immediately. Only my 840 has issues uploading. So what I'm doing now is starting a hotspot on my phone and using the Wi-Fi sync option. I still haven't been able to nail down what the issue is with my 840.

  • Yep, have this issue too.  Seems hit or miss as to when the Edge 840 connects.  I can see it on my phone and even initiate a sync, yet the Edge will say "Waiting for phone" for the weather screen and won't upload saved rides.
