There is a volume option on the phone connection app, but pressing it does nothing :-) The volume on the 540 is so high it actually distorts on the unit. Can we have a way to lower it please?

For me all alerts are FAR too loud on the 840.
Especially when you use navigation the alerts are really bothering. But I need them to remind me on turns or getting off track.
So to switch of the sounds is…

bradtipp Unfortunately, adjusting the volume setting on your phone would not result in a change of the volume on the Edge. What feature specifically do you feel the volume is too loud for?
Mainly the end of segment or climb multi tone announcement. The other single bleeps seem fine, but the multi-tone ones are VERY load and slightly distorted, to my hearing.

It really such me and bike buddies riding with me, even they are 10m away.
So what to do?
A little workaround. At the back directly beside the lock circle you will find 2 little holes where the piezo speaker is behind.
If you put some tape on it, it will be significantly more quite.
JUST I do not know if the air pressure sensor which is needed to detect the height uses that holes as well.
