Stuck on firmware 7.19 and radar permanently disconnected

So far, I am impressed with my Solar 840. However, I have only completed 1 indoor ride and then 1 outdoor ride.

At the start of my outdoor ride yesterday I noticed my RCT715 did not transfer over to my Solar 840 from my 530. Once connected, all good. Then 2 hours in, the radar dropped out, never to reconnect. I rebooted the radar several times, rebooted the Edge 840 several times, removed the radar from the Edge 840 etc. Nothing so far is connecting them again.

I noticed I am on firmware 7.19 and 9.09 is out. I've been hitting the "Check for updates" option on the Edge 840 and it will not update.

I've since tried a full reset of my Edge 840 and again, updating to 9.09 is not happening. I don't have a Mac or Windows machine handy for Garmin Express.

Anybody else experiencing these issues?

Thanks.

  • I have a 840 (non-Solar) and I didn't have any issue updating from 7.09 to 9.09. However, just like you, none of the ANT+ light network devices including my Varia RTL-515 transferred over from 530. I had to add them to the 840 as new devices. I haven't had any issue with the radar disconnecting and never reconnecting.

  • Light networks are not transferable across units as the lights need to store the ID of the controlling head unit. This requires lights to be paired manually with a new unit.

  • I tried resetting my 840 and still couldn't connect to my radar as it did when I was newly setting it up just a few days ago. I then, for some reason, tried holding the power button of my RCT715 (to put it in pairing mode) and bingo! We have a connection. I didn't do this the first time they connected (as I was riding when I did it).

    I hope that helps someone.

As for the firmware update to 9.09, this would not happen when I tried and tried manually hitting the "check for updates" option. But days later (yesterday I think) the device popped up saying update 9.09 was available to install. It was seamless. I don't know why the delay, but we got there.
