3D Map View Missing?

I just received my 840 today and I can't find an option to switch it to the 3D map view? Is this missing from the new device?

For me, this feature was the main reason to actually by an Edge again, since the Fenix 7 that I use now doesn't have it. I thought that's something specific for the Fenix, as the 830 (lost that one unfortunately :() had it and I loved it there.

The 3D map view makes it so much easier to navigate a route when mountainbiking. If this is missing, I might consider returning the device, since most other advantages of the Edge over the Fenix aren't that important to me. :/

  • I think 3D was discontinued on the 1040. Probably the 840 too. 3D hasn’t worked well on other models since chevrons were added to show route direction.

  • Yeah I kind of liked the 3D Map View too! Disappointed

  • Thanks for letting me know.

That really sucks, though. They should fix that instead of removing a very useful feature. 3D navigation is the absolute standard in cars, so there clearly seems to be an advantage to it, when navigating. Last time when I used it (about a year ago on the 830), it worked fine for me. Maybe the problems were introduced in a later update.

But overall, I often really don't understand the focus of Garmin. e.g. take the edge remote control. That's a really neat idea (and I actually still have one from my 830), but the amount of functions you can assign to it is ridiculously low. And to me the only really useful one is to switch to the map or the height profile. The lap button on the remote is fixed, you can't change it. Why on earth would you design that thing like that? I do understand that the lap function might be important to some people and that's totally fine. But why have a fixed button for it instead of just making it configurable? I don't get it. If you think it through, you could do really neat things with the remote. e.g. assign a button to be able to walk through the different map views, i.e. north-up, driving direction up and 3D view. That would be so helpful in many situations.

I know, I'm not the only one using these devices and others have other priorities and that's absolutely fine. But I still don't get it. These devices could be so much better than they are. Frowning2

  • I agree. I don't think Garmin is listening to their customers. Why the extreme focus on battery life. How many users ride 50 hours? A few but the vast majority ride two or three hours. Why not instead engineer a brighter screen? I normally don't have the backlight on but there are days with conditions that need it on 100%. The competition simply has better screens.

The Lap button on the remote irritates me too. The remote works fine and I use it all the time but I have never used it's lap button. Easy to press the lap button on the Garmin. I suppose if you are concerned about milliseconds then the remote lap button is ideal but how many of us need that kind of accuracy? How about allowing it to be programed to zoom the map in and out?

  • Yeah zoom is a good idea as well. There are many useful functions that you could assign to those buttons, but somehow we're limited to only a handful.
