Not enough memory for map update

How do I make room?  Plugged into Garmin Express, I get "Map Update Available."   I hit Install and it says "Not enough memory."  Details shows a Trailforks map 149.78 MB.  PC says 1.21 GB free space on Garmin drive.

In GE Manage Maps, it shows two checked, Routable Cycle map of Europe and Routable Cycle Map of North America.  On the device, it shows 16 maps, one of which is a Trailforks map.

  • What version of the NA and EU maps are shown on the Edge when you look a the map information under navigation

  • I think with the increases in map size with the added ClimbPro data maps that you can no longer get the whole of NA and EU on a single unit with the latest builds of the maps.

You can have the whole of one region and a subset of another on the 840. You can switch maps out if needed. What region do you typically ride in? I would install the whole of that region and uninstall the other.

  • How do you accomplish installing all of one and uninstalling all of the other?  Is there a means of doing that in GE or does it involve individually deleting some of the 16 map files on the device and then figuring out which need to be installed?

  • If you go to Garmin Express and then to the 840 you should see an option to access the "Map manager". This allows you to unselect a map to remove it and gives access to install just regions of map.

  • OK.  Did that.  Deselected Europe.  As expected, that freed up a heck of a lot more space.  Update for the Trailforks map went as usual after that.  So far, so good.   Thanks

  • that is true but not a long-term solution. With EU and NA maps + trailforks pre-installed on a brand new $450 device it's ridiculous that you have to delete EU or NA in order to update to latest trailforks 2023.10 version (which is only 158MB). What if you like to travel with your new 840 and want both maps working at the same time? You can NOT delete existing trailforks and install latest version.

Also, once you delete EU maps from the unit it will NOT let you re-install it...it asks you to delete North America (been there, done that).

    Someone fix this issue!

  • Agreed! This unit was marketed with having more space to hold all your maps. And now we cannot update. That's poor design from Garmin. And what does these memory costs anyways? They could have easily doubled the storage.

  • Yep! All the marketing about bigger and better (and more expensive) devices and then it won't let you update to the latest map versions... ridiculous!

FWIW: I was able to eventually update to latest North America 2023.10 maps but Trailforks is not able to be updated due to not enough storage on this brand new 450+ Dollar device... ShrugShrug

  • I just ran into this as well.  I'd like to have multiple regions on the 840 so I don't risk forgetting to load the one I need for a trip.  That said, I don't use Trailforks since I only ride on roads so I'd delete it if I could to free up a bit of space - but it doesn't seem to be something you can delete.

The update process seems broken.  There would be enough space if they deleted the old map and then copied over the new vs copying over the new first while the old one is still in place.  I understand it would introduce the possibility of having no map at all if the update fails part way through, but the current scheme doesn't work at all.

How do we get this fixed?

  • Same issue here. I had to delete some pre-installed maps to get the updated maps to version 2023.10. After the update the climb pro feature seemed to be broken in free mode. I suspect the update mess up something with the climb pro maps.

I agree with the poor space available in 2023 on a 450+ device that should be the best device Garmin can deliver to its customers.

Hope a firmware update can fix this problem.

Anyone else with climb pro feature not working in free mode after upgrading the maps?
