Temperature Questions

Hello.

I have a non-solar version.

1) Wi-Fi would not connect unless I tuned off WPA2/3 set it to just 2(Unifi wifi).

2) Tempueture reads 10-20 degers(F) hotter than actual.

I hope both can be fixed in future FW.

Take care

  • Not for Garmin, but for other devices where I've encountered this same issue I have ended up with WPA2 for 2GHz and then WPA2/3 for 5/6GHz.  I have them on their own WiFi networks, even though they are named/SSID the same.

  • No issues with WIFI here (yet) but temperature is the internal temperature of the device, which is always hotter than the ambient.  On a bike in motion, it's closer to ambient, but is basically always hotter.  This has been the case since the very first Edge units.  I expect no change or improvement.

Garmin does make a separate temperature sensor "Tempe" that can be paired with the 840.  I haven't used one but I believe this is better showing the correct ambient temperature.

  • I'll have to agree with 's explanation of the temperature reading from your device. This is by design, the thermometer can read higher than other sources due to the internal heat from the screen and the battery of the Edge.

As for the Wifi issue, I would like to look into this further. Please respond with the following:

    1. Do we have permission to email you?
    2. Which country are you located in?
    3. What is the firmware version of your Edge?
  • Yes

    wifi not working again

thanks from long time Garmin fan!!!

  • I think temperature is one area where we have to cut Garmin some slack.  With times of full exposure to sun heating, it would be impossible to get accurate ambient readings anyway, so I'd rather have a a true reading of the unit's internal temperature.  I'm actually surprised it doesn't run even further above ambient than it does.  The Tempe sensor would be the only way to get an accurate ambient, if you can can find somewhere on a bike that isn't subject to sun heating.

  • If it's like the past Edge units, the temperature sensor is integral to the baro sensor because the baro sensor is temperature sensitive and its temp is needed to correct its reading.  Displaying that temp is a byproduct of this function.  It accurately reads the temp of the baro sensor, but not ambient temp.

  • Can someone confirm that the Tempe pairs with the 840-. I know it is not available on my 830, 1000, and 800.

  • Tempe is listed on page 40 of the 840 US manual under Wireless Sensors, but  I just checked the Garmin website and neither says it's compatible with the other, so IDK.

  • The Tempe works with the 1040/840/540

  • Thanks, I have a Tempe I use for hiking / backpacking. Might work well attached under the saddle out of the sun.
