"The definition of insanity is...

... doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results."  I just ordered an 840, so I def fit the criterion.

  • I got it hoping against hope it would work better and have less bugs than previous units.  I'm dealing with a few  ATM.  Is it less buggy than previous units?  I think it is, but still has bugs in basic operation that makes me wonder WTF.

  • yes. Coming from a 530, I experienced poor GPS tracking in the woods on that unit and hoped the multi band + touchscreen would be worth the upgrade.

But WOW, is the UI on the 840 garbage. I've been using Garmin's for 4 years now and feel like I am back to Day 1 trying to understand how to navigate this thing.

  • I upgraded too.  My justifications (to myself) were that it was for a new bike and the very slightly scratched plastic of my old 530 didn't go. I've also saved a tiny bit extra weight as the more accurate GPS doesn't need the speed sensor anymore.  Seriously, however, the 530 got me off the route a few times in challenging locations, including getting lost on an off road sportive in fog. The 840 seems much more locked on and the directioning is clearer where you double back on yourself.  I am also delighted with the much easier to use interface and map having gone for the touch version.

I avoided the solar version as living the UK, as the battery life is already stella and I can't see it ever making a significant difference, other than cool factor. On battery life, and my most compelling reason for upgrading, was that my 530 was three years old and the batter way only giving me about 8-10 hours which wasn't enough some days. The 840 is giving me 2 to 3 times that even with mapping on, HRM pro, varia rear radar, SRAM axs connected and a power meter. (I am a gadget victim.)
