same here - just paid 500€ for some 'nice to haves'
us lot are crazy...
I'm hoping the firmware will be a lot better sorted out-of-the-box than the previous Edge units I've bought. The 840 appears to be virtually identical to the 1040 software-wise so, the hope is, that it benefited from many of those teething problems being resolved. One I'm still concerned about is the ability to turn off lock-on-road, which I don't think has been fixed yet on the 1040. I want my indicated position and recorded track to reflect my actual position and track, not a fictional track on the nearest road.
I wouldn't bet on it, the 1040 still has a lot of issues that were "fixed" only to turn out that the issues are still present.

Yep. That's crazy part, expecting it to be different this time.
Guilty. I'm currently trying to decide to solar or not. Solar would be cool, but I'm not sure it's more than that based on what I'm seeing in the reviews. The flipside is that it does (invisible solar panel) reduce brightness and clarity on the screen.
I'm pretty sure I'm going 840, no solar.
That's same as dcrainmakers recommendation
Are you sure this is not fixed? It's one of my pet peeves and I am able to switch that off. It's just that the lock on road option is difficult to find, i.e. if you tell me where it is, I cannot tell you off my head
