Edge 830 bricked after formating memory

  • connected my device to my tablet and copied three new tracks to Garmin/NewFiles
  • ejected the Garmin mass storage device
  • unplugged it after getting the message that it is ready to disconnect

So far everything worked like many times before.

  • Device didn't restart completely
  • After holding the power button 10 seconds and a few failed boots it came up
  • showed the default screen
  • touched the screen once on the hamburger menu button and it scrambled
  • further resets by holding the power button never got the device started again

Looked around on the net and

  • held lap and start/stop and reseted (since switching on/off didn't work anymore) - still no success
  • connected the device to my linux computer and found the drive
  • formated the device using mkfs.fat -F32 /dev/sdb
  • synced before disconnect

Now the device isn't shown as a mass storage device anymore and I can't get it to start.

After a reset (holding the power button for 10 seconds) it beeps, seems to start and gets stuck with a black screen with the word GARMIN printed in bold on it.

Resetting by holding the power button while being connected to my computer shows in dmesg the following messages:

[ 7752.181808] usb 1-7: new high-speed USB device number 55 using xhci_hcd
[ 7752.313784] usb 1-7: device descriptor read/64, error -71

[ 7758.913329] usb 1-7: USB disconnect, device number 57

If I hold the lap button during reboot it takes a few secnds longer until the USB disconnect message.

I tried to find information about unbricking the device, but didn't find anything.

  • Is there some guide how to boot the device into a recovery mode and load its flash with a new firmware?
  • Is there anything else I could do to get more information about the state of the device and how to repair it?
