Executing a Garmin Cycling Coach training plan on the Edge 830

I created a Garmin Cycling Coach Training Plan in Garmin Connect.  I could not for the life of me figure out how to get the plan to sync with my Edge 830.  So I called Garmin support and was told that the cycling coaching plans are not compatible with the 830.  This is disappointing, as the Edge 830 is a dedicated cycling computer and is not that old.  Equally annoying is that this page says:

What Garmin Products Can I Use With These Plans?

Edge® cycling computers that have a workout feature along with select multisport watches can take advantage of these plans.

That statement is not true, apparently, since this page lists compatible devices, and the 830 is not on that list.

However, the Forerunner 265 is on that list, and I have a Forerunner 265, and I see the plan workouts on my watch.  So I wonder if I can record the workout using my Forerunner, while also using my Edge 830.  Has anyone tried this?  Would I need to pair all my sensors (HR, power, speed) with my watch?  Can both devices get a signal from the same sensors?

The other thing I thought of, and asked the support rep, was if I create the exact workout in Garmin Connect and upload it to my Edge 830, would Garmin Connect recognize that I had done that day's workout after it gets uploaded?  Her answer to that was "no."

  • I discovered there an "extended display" feature that allows data from my FR265 to be displayed on my Edge 830.  However, when in extended display mode, I can't display the map on my Edge, which kind of defeats the purpose of using my Edge.  Plus, it's very buggy - the Edge keeps dropping the connection with the FR265 (it will connect and then after a minute or so, change to "searching for watch"), despite the two being right next to each other. Classic Garmin technology.

So I guess the Garmin Cycling Coach is not the great feature I had hoped it was going to be.
