Boot Loop after deleting img-File

While freeing some space from my device, I may have mixed up a map file with another 500 MB img, which I deleted as well. Seems it was some part of the operating system.

The startup process seems to be normal at first, but then stops with 3 running dots and message "Loading courses, workouts and locations ..."

What I tried:

  • soft reset with the hardware buttons - same behaviour as described above
  • connecting to PC - does not show up as device, linux debug messages:
    • [ 879.339687] usb 1-3: new high-speed USB device number 14 using xhci_hcd
      [ 879.480000] usb 1-3: New USB device found, idVendor=091e, idProduct=0003, bcdDevice= 0.01
      [ 879.480017] usb 1-3: New USB device strings: Mfr=0, Product=0, SerialNumber=0
      [ 879.482082] usb 1-3: can't set config #1, error -71
      [ 879.482245] usb 1-3: USB disconnect, device number 14

Charging still works.

  • Sorry, no help.

But here is a good lesson for other users. If you are going to delete files on your device, copy them to the PC BEFORE deleting them. At least then you can copy a file back if you have problems.

  • I was able to resolve the issue.

While powering the device by connecting it with the laptop, i pushed and hold the lower left button (round?). This forced the immediate usb-mode, inspite of normal boot at first. Then I removed a partial transfered file. On reboot, the device did the normal setup, which I tried to initiate already before by pressing all 3 buttons.

Another lesson learned: don't just move img files to the Garmin, but give it a telling name.
