How do you turn off the nightlight when using external power

I use the Edge 830 with the external battery option.
When riding in the dark, I don't want my screen lit up all the time as it kills my night vision (and drains the battery on long rides). Instead I prefer it to light up if I touch the screen or when a turn approaches.
When riding without the battery, this happens fine but as soon as I connect to the battery (and even if the battery is off), I no longer get the timer for the back light and it's lit up all the time.
Is there some way of overriding this or does riding with a battery mean it will just be on all the time.

After connecting to the external battery, return to the display settings screen and change the backlight options to your preferred settings.

That's the problem though, the settings are as I want them but connecting to the battery somehow overrides them and the automatic dimming doesn't happen

Yes, you’re correct about the backlight timeout being overridden when the external battery is connected, but that doesn’t bother me as I prefer 10% always on at night anyway and that has very little impact on power use. It’s more annoying that the initial plug in sends the backlight to 100%.

Peter, OK think I get what you're saying.
Once you connect to the external battery, you go into settings and simply set to 10% light, is that right?
I guess that's a good compromise.
Alternatively, I'll charge my battery during the day and turn off the external battery at night so I can have the option I really want
